Important: Cell Phone Policy Update

Posted Date: 8/04/25 (4:00 PM)

Dear Bridgehampton Families,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well and enjoying the final stretch of summer. As we prepare to welcome students back for the upcoming school year, I want to share an important update regarding our Personal Electronic Device Policy and how we will partner together to make this a successful transition for all.

Beginning this school year, and in compliance with New York State Education Law §2803, which aims to help students stay focused, engaged, and develop healthy digital habits, our district will fully implement the updated Policy 5695: Students and Personal Electronic Deviceswhich limits the use of internet-enabled personal devices such as smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches

Here’s what the policy means for students:

  • Elementary (PreK–6): Students are discouraged from bringing devices to school. If they do, the device must remain off and stored in their classroom’s designated cubby or caddy.
  • Secondary (Grades 7–12): Students must keep devices off and stored in their lockers for the entire school day, including passing time, lunch, and study skills.
We know that this is a significant change, and we want to emphasize: This is not about punishment, it’s about partnership. Our goal is to help students build healthy habits and take ownership of their learning environment. Should infractions occur, our team will respond with compassion, clarity, and consistency, as outlined in the policy’s progressive approach to consequences. In addition, we’ll work closely with families to support students who may need extra help adjusting.

We will be reinforcing this policy regularly with students, especially at the start of the school year and after breaks. We also ask for your support at home by talking with your child about the purpose of this policy and encouraging responsible technology use.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust as we work together to promote a school culture where every student can thrive—free from unnecessary distractions and fully engaged in the learning journey.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me directly at your convenience.

Warm regards,
Michael Cox
